If you are dealing with a clog, and only one fixture is affected (such as an individual sink, toilet, or shower), then it is safe to say the clog can be isolated to that individual line.
If, however, there is a clog and more than one fixture is affected, the clog is most likely located in your main drain line.
If you have a drain snake available, you can try to break through the clog on your own. That may or may not work.
Depending on the severity of the clog, and where it is located, you might need commercial sized equipment to break the clog open completely.
With a quick Google search, you can find a plethora of suggestions for do-it-yourself drain clearing solutions.
Some suggestions are mechanical (ie. utilizing a drain snake to poke through or pull out a clog).
Other suggestions are liquid in nature. Either chemical solutions found at the local home improvement store, or more natural solutions made up of items found in your pantry.
In either case, those DIY suggestions could help in the immediate; but, do they provide a long-term solution?
In our opinion, and obviously we are biased, there is no substitute for professional drain services.
It might cost more initially; but, in the long run, service from our professionals may be a much better value.

We had a very old sewer service line that was stopped up. Garden City sent Patrick out to determine the problem and it turned out that the line was full of tree roots and there was no outside cleanout. He and his crew were extremely responsive, kept us functional to the highest degree possible while adding a cleanout and replacing a significant part of the old clay pipe. They were great communicators, always responsive and did a great job. We will be using Garden City to clean out the line on a regular basis and highly recommend them for your plumbing needs.

Tree roots are attracted to water. Depending on the age and condition of your drainage lines, tree roots are resilient enough to work their way into the pipes. This intrusion can cause clogs and drainage issues if not addressed.
That is really up to you. You can try some simple steps first to see if you are able to take care of it yourself. If your toilet is clogged, try a plunger or drain snake (if you have one available). If that doesn't work, or if it seems like a bigger project than you can handle, we would recommend giving a trained drain professional a call.
There are many steps you can take to prevent clogs. Some suggestions would be to: keep food & grease out of kitchen drains, put leftover food in the trash and not down the garbage disposal, and keep hair & soap scum out of bathroom drains.
